Draw Five proves a clash of titans at the 2023 BC Men’s and BC Scotties Women’s Curling Championships
Day 2 of the 2023 BC Men’s and BC Scotties Women’s Curling Championships continued with Draw 5 and all 6 sheets ice in play at the World Class’ Chilliwack Curling and Community Centre.
The feature game was two of Canada’s top Next Gen team’s battling for a spot in the women’s 1v2 game. Team Grandy was able to take control early scoring 3 in the first end. The team from the Kamloops Curling Club answered back with a deuce in the second end followed up by a game changing steal of 3 in the 3rd to give Team Brown at 5-3 advantage Grandy was able to bounce back and tie the game in the 4th end by scoring 2. The game took a more conservative tone in the second half where the lead continued to see-saw with exchanges of single points in the 5th and 6th ends followed by a steal of 1 for Team brown in the 7 to take the lead 8-6 playing 9. Team Grandy was able to score their deuce in the 9th to ensure this one was going to come down to the final end. Lots of rocks were in play on the 10th and Team Brown was able to score there single in the 10th to earn the spot in the 1V2 game.
In men’s there were 4 B event games in action, two B quarter-finals featuring Joanisse VS Robillard and Cseke VS Cotter along with 2 B event round of 16 game featuring Team Geall vs Team Montgomery and Team de Jong vs Team Tanaka. The first B semi-final was a battle of the touring Team Robillard and the experienced Team Joanisse. Team Robillard defeated Team Joanisse 7-3 in 7 ends. In the Cseke/Cotter matchup it was a rematch of Draw 3 that saw Team Cotter defeat Team Cseke 10-4. Team Cseke who are known as “The Islanders” on the BC Curling Tour once again got off to a hot start leading 2-0 after two ends in thanks to a steal of 1 in the second. However, for the remainder of the first half it was all Team Cotter scoring 4 in the 3rd end and another 3 in the 5th end. Team Cseke was forced to one point in the 5th and was able to pull within two by stealing in the 7th. Another score of 2 in the 8th end put the game in the favour of Team Cotter leading 9-5 playing the 9th end. In the Geall Vs Montgomery game, it was all Team Geall early who were able to retain a sizeable 7-3 advantage after 7 end of the game. The Team from Vancouver Island showed their grit by scoring in 8 and steal two in 9 to pull with 1 point playing the 10th end. Team Montgomery was able to steal 2 10 to make the final 8-7 in Team Montgomery’s favour. In the Tanaka vs de Jong it was all Team Tanaka winning the game 7-2 in 8 ends. Team Tanaka will wait to play Team ENTER here in their B event Quarterfinal at 7:00PM tonight.
Draw 6 will feature our Men’s A qualifier where Team Gauthier will battle the defending champions Team Pierce for a spot in the Men’s 1V2 Game.
