August Club of the Month – Campbell River
Our club of the month for August is the Campbell River Curling Club!
The Campbell River Curling Club is a four-sheet club that opened its doors in January 1964. Three hundred memberships were initially sold to raise money for the club and the original building was constructed by community volunteers. This long tradition of community and volunteerism persists through our club today. We continue to manage most aspects of our club including facility and property maintenance through the power of volunteers.
Our club proudly celebrates our 60th anniversary in 2024. We remain completely owned by our members and run by our volunteer Board of Directors with the support of dedicated seasonal staff. We currently have about 375 curlers and over the past 3 years have welcomed more than 100 new curlers through our popular beginner leagues. We offer leagues and programs for women’s, men’s, open, beginner/novice, 50+, Special Olympics, Blind Curling, and Junior curling. Many curlers have benefited from the support of our volunteer coaches who keenly share their time and knowledge on and off the ice.
In addition to our leagues and programs, our curlers attend bonspiels and events across the island. Our curlers have also represented BC at various national levels over the years. We are home to Team BC 2024 Special Olympics Canada Curling Bronze Medalists, 2019 BC Master’s Men’s curling champions, 2016 BC Women’s Club Champions, 2010 & 2023 Canadian Firefighters Champions. In 2012, we held the Guinness Book of World Records longest marathon curling game (228 ends played by 10 curlers, over 62 hours, 15 minutes and 25 seconds)!
This year we are excited to get back on the ice with a new (to us) set of rocks purchased with the generous support of our members, community organizations, and local business sponsors. This year we also celebrate the contributions of our Club Manager, Susan Johnson, the most recent recipient of Curl BC’s Ron Houston Administrator of the Year Award.
We welcome everyone to stop in for refreshments, or to come and join us for a bonspiel!
