Win a trip to Mexico!
A hard working group of volunteers is working hard to build Portland’s first dedicated curling rink. You can help them out by entering to win a trip for two to Mexico. Please read the following message from their President, Steve Liske:
The Evergreen Curling Club in Portland, Oregon is in the midst of a capital campaign, for the purpose of creating the second dedicated curling club on the west coast of the United States. Our latest fundraiser is a vacation give-away to the beautiful all-inclusive four star Velas Vallarta Resort in Puerto Vallarta. The trip is for two people, for seven nights, and includes airfare from anywhere in the continental U.S. or Canada, accommodations, and ALL food and drinks at the resort! My wife and I vacationed there in February and we agreed that it was one of the most enjoyable and memorable vacations we’ve ever taken. In fact, we loved it so much we decided to donate a trip to our curling club to help us raise funds and ultimately to help grow the sport of curling in our area.
A donation of $25 will get you entered to win and a tax receipt. For more information, or to enter, please click here.
The Evergreen Curling Club, founded in 2002, has approximately 150 enthusiastic members who share rented ice with skaters and Zamboni machines! Needless to say, we would very much like to curl on our own dedicated ice. Of course, this is easier said than done, particularly in the U.S. With no state or federal support available to us, the task of raising 2-3 million dollars to purchase land and construct a dedicated curling club was proving to be quite intimidating.
For a fraction of the cost and requiring less time, we decided to follow a model that was successfully implemented in 2008 by the Columbus Curling Club in Ohio. Specifically, we will transition to dedicated curling ice by leasing suitable warehouse space, installing an ice mat system, and constructing other necessary improvements.
I am happy to report that we have made tremendous progress. Entirely through volunteer efforts, we have identified a suitable location, developed a business plan, and launched a capital campaign. During our first fundraiser, attended by ECC members, we raised over $108,000 in donations and pledges! It was an encouraging start to our fundraising to be sure. As of this writing we stand at approximately $176,000 raised (of the estimated $300,000 needed) and we continue to explore other avenues to raise additional funds.
We have enjoyed tremendous BC hospitality in many of your bonspiels over the years, and nothing would make us happier than to return the favor in our new facility. With your help, we will do it!
