Kimberley & Kamloops to host the 2011 BC Wheelchair and Senior Curling Championships

Richmond, BC (April 14, 2010) – Curl BC is pleased to announce that the Kimberley Curling Club will host the 2011 BC Wheelchair Curling Championship, February 3-6, 2011, and that the Kamloops Curling Club will host the 2011 BC Senior Men’s and Women’s Curling Championships, February 20-26, 2011.

The BC Wheelchair Championship will host the top wheelchair curlers in the province. BC has dominated the wheelchair curling scene recently, being home to the 2010 Paralympic gold medal team as well as both the 2010 Canadian Wheelchair gold and silver medalists. British Columbia wheelchair teams have won the past four Canadian Championships.

The BC Senior Men’s & Women’s Championships will showcase the top eight senior men’s and top eight senior women’s curling teams. Each event will feature an eight team round-robin, followed by a three-team playoff. The Christine Jurgenson senior women’s team from the Juan de Fuca Curling Club won the 2008 Canadian & 2009 World Championships. They repeated their success this year, capturing the 2010 Canadian title for the second time.

The Kimberley Curling Club has six sheets of ice and recently invested in significant accessibility upgrades including a covered wheelchair ramp and automatic doors leading into the building. The last provincial event hosted by this club was the 2009 Williams Moving & Storage BC Mixed Curling Championship presented by Merit Travel.

The Kamloops Curling Club has eight sheets of ice and has hosted many provincial and national events including the 1986 Canadian Mixed, 1996 Men’s Brier, 1998 World Men’s & Women’s, 2003-2008 Strauss Canada Cup of Curling and the 2007 Scotties Tournament of Hearts BC Women’s Curling Championship presented by Best Western.
